A busy week

I've had a busy but enjoyable week. Last Saturday I was invited out to an afternoon tea for the local cooks for Friday Light. I didn't think I'd know anyone except Christine who cooks the alternate month to me but was pleasantly surprised to find there was only one person I hadn't met. And I was seated next to a friend of my son who I haven't seen for quite a while so we had a bit of a catch up.

Church in a school hall. We've doubled in size since this was taken.

On Sunday I was early to church as I was a door welcomer. I quite enjoy doing that, I usually take the outside door (but stand inside it at this time of year) and say a hello to people as they arrive. Some like to stand and chat as well. Our little congregation is growing but it would be nice to see some families. Still, I'm sure God knows what His plan is for us. :)

And on Monday there was a daytime Aglow meeting which I helped to organise with my friend Kay. A lot of our members are getting older and don't like to go out at night in winter so we organised a soup and bun lunchtime meeting. It was a great day and about 50 people turned up. I estimate we had 20 litres of soup and only enough left over for Bob and I to have a cupful each for tea that night. It was a long day though, Kay and I were there setting up, running the meeting and dismantling from 10:30am until 4pm. Too much for just two people I've decided :) I was meant to go out on Tuesday as well but spent the day recovering - and napping. We're not as young as we used to be.

Aglow communion table.

I was at the shop on Wednesday and Thursday, I was quite pleased it wasn't busy, the days were bitter and not many people about.

Our second hand book section

And yesterday, Friday, Carol and I went for afternoon tea with Kelly. She lives on a lifestyle block on the outskirts of town and she met us with one of her 'friends'. I think she said they have twenty ducks and some of them are sitting on eggs. They're going to re home the drakes, I wonder why :) She's busy doing up the old shed in the background and is thinking of using it for flower arranging.

Kelly also has a lovely little gift shop in the old barn. Ducks Crossing Barn Shop. It's full of all sorts of goodies including handmade articles made by local artisans. It's good to see her supporting the local art/craft community.

Kelly and Carol in a corner of the shop. It's a bit chilly inside but there is a fire that gets cranked up when customers come in.

And a warm drink station with dainty bone china cups and mugs to drink from. I love that stained glass window. She did tell me once upon a time where it came from but for the life of me I can't remember. The property is one of the original ones on the Taieri Plain and has quite an extensive garden attached.

After a wee wander we went inside for a lovely cup of tea and warm apple cake. We were greeted there by a couple of little powder puff dogs, not at all what you expect on a lifestyle block :) And then I looked up and half a dozen chickens had arrived on the deck and were waiting for treats. We'd already treated two of the ducks, they ate out of our hands but I wasn't interested in chooks doing the same.

We had a lovely afternoon and I nearly forgot to leave, Kelly is so warm and welcoming.

But somewhere amongst all that someone has very unselfishly shared their cold with me and I'm a bit under the weather at the moment. I won't be going to church in the morning but will watch our mother church on live stream, that's what Bob does on a Sunday morning so I'll join him.

That's it from me for now.

Keep well,
blessings,

Diana

And the ducks came back

About six weeks ago it was thought things were getting a bit overcrowded so some of the ducks had to be culled.

About a dozen or so were rounded up, put into crates
and loaded onto the back of the ute.

They drove for a couple of hours and released the ducks near a large body of water where there was no danger of overcrowding.

A week ago the ducks came back - bringing all their kids with them.
Obviously there's no place like home :)

Take care, have a good week.

Sunset at the village

Last weekend I went down to Gore for a women's retreat with American author Sharon Garlough Brown. I went with a couple of friends and we shared a unit at the hotel. We were asked not to take photo's at the retreat but I thought I'd show you these that I took at sunset the night we arrived.

We were filling in time until we went out for our evening meal and so decided to visit the little heritage village across the road from the hotel.  I thought I had one or two more of the buildings but no :(

Once through the gate we were met by this flock of ducks, and the occasional goose, on the grass just beside the stream.

Some of them objected to us disturbing them and departed for the water where I guess they thought we wouldn't follow them and as it was winter they were right :)

There was a display of old farm implements.

The gate to the right of the church is a memorial to the
pioneer women of the district and was erected in 1944.
(Though probably not in this spot, I'm not sure).

We wandered over a little bridge, around the path and up the
side of the stream opposite where we had entered.

Then across another little bridge where we were met by this duck and goose who had wandered away from the main bunch.

It was a nice walk but by then it was starting to get dark and colder so we headed back to the hotel, got in the car and went out for our meal. Chinese, it was delicious.

That's it for the moment, I'm sorry some of the photos are a bit dark, but it was just on dusk.

Have a good week,
blessings,
Diana

Lunch at the gardens

Yesterday dawned cool and crisp, just 5C when I climbed out of bed. A lovely sunny, autumn day but with a decided nip in the air. Just nice for a wander around the Botanic Gardens about lunch time.

If you zoom in you will see people sitting on benches enjoying the sun.

On Sunday my son usually takes me and a friend in to church but yesterday he and his wife were wanting to stay in town and do some shopping after the service. So my friend and I decided to take her car and go somewhere for lunch.

The rose gardens are getting a bit shabby.

We decided on the Gardens tea rooms as we were down that end of town anyway and parking wouldn't be such a problem as if we went into the CBD. After a nice relaxed lunch we decided to have a bit of a stroll around, it was such a nice day.

Ducks on a small part of the pond.

We wandered through the tropical glasshouse, too hot in our winter coats and a relief to get back out into the cooler air :) Then through the rose gardens and past the duck pond. There were a lot of ducks around, maybe they knew it was the start of duck shooting season this weekend. Finally past the bandstand and the children's play area and it was up the hilly part to the car.

The children's play area.

I hope you've enjoyed this little stroll around a small part of the gardens with us. They really are rather lovely at any time of the year.

We really enjoyed ourselves and have decided to have lunch out on a Sunday more often.

Have a good week,

Diana

Bellview Wetlands

Back in December eldest daughter held her 50th birthday party at Bellview Wetlands in Lawrence. The wetlands are still being developed and there are walking tracks, picnic areas and a barbecue area for people to enjoy. There are also some old buildings being restored but we never got photos of them although you can see some of them in the background of some of the photos. A lovely relaxing place to visit.
I'll let the pictures do the talking. Enjoy :)

And to finish off, some of the party goers feeding
the eels in one of the ponds :)

A short stroll around the lake

While my little mother was in hospital recently I had the opportunity to go for a stroll around Hamilton Lake or Lake Rotoroa as it is known in Maori. Ten minutes walk from my motel I found the lane I had been directed to and walked from a busy city street to a tranquil lakeside walkway.

There  were marvellous houses backing onto the lakeside, some with low fences and others opened up to the lake vista.
The lake was surrounded by native flora and of course
 a lot of bird life.

Quite a number of cheeky Pukeko,

a solitary Shag,

Mallard ducks,

a few Australian coots, (related to the Pukeko)

and a good flock of Canada geese.

I came across a wonderful children's playground

with this fabulous climbing fort.
There was also a nice cafe nearby but I never went in,
I didn't have time as I was heading back to the hospital.

Of course there were also the usual doves or pigeons,
you don't go far without seeing them around.

The sun was getting low in the sky as I headed back
to the entrance and I got this shot of the lake.

I enjoyed this nice peaceful walk, away from the
hustle and bustle of the city and everything happening at the hospital, a lovely way to recharge my batteries.

Creatures great and small...

...well, mostly small :)
Both my little mother and my GKB are napping at the moment, it's that sort of day, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to put up a few photos I took during the week.

My eldest granddaughter came over to visit her great grandmother and brought her little dog, Mack, with her. Mack sulked throughout the visit because my GKB didn't pay him due attention when he first arrived. When my GKB was ready for him Mack turned his back and refused to have anything to do with him. Doesn't he look just a little sulky to you?

Then a day or so later youngest granddaughter arrived with her new puppy, which she was not supposed to get and is now in the throes of winning her father over and showing him she is a responsible owner. Meet Sass, isn't she a cutie, 8 weeks old and exhausted from playing with the big dog at another friend's house so she slept the visit away.

Today I went to a friends home or a flying visit and one of the local duck families came to the back door to visit. Mum and five ducklings. It had been raining so they were poking around in the grass looking for worms I guess.

That's Mum standing to attention and watching me closely.

Mum and some of her babies, they're about half grown and stay with the mother for about 20 weeks.

This wee one is the runt and considerably smaller than his brothers and sisters. More scruffy looking too.

And guess who this is? This is dad, heading in the opposite direction to his brood at a very fast pace :)

This is one of two families of ducklings in this little village, there were 11 babies in the other family but I believe some of them went missing in various ways. I haven't seen that family for a while.

Have a great week
