Done and dusted

No not 2016, although that is certainly done and dusted.
And not Christmas either, although that is well and truly done
 and dusted too.
My reading challenge - done and dusted, thank goodness.

Would I do another one? I don't think so. Having a deadline to finish a book took the joy out of reading, for me anyway, so what's the point? But it meant I got some books out of the way that have been lying around for years in some cases. I will probably do the winter reading challenge at the local library though, it encourages you to look at different genre's, has a bit more focus than just getting through books you haven't got round to reading yet.

Some of the books I enjoyed, some I struggled with and one I didn't finish. A mixed bag. Most of them have now gone to a book sale for  someone else to enjoy.

And as it well into New Year's Eve here,
all that remains is for me to wish everyone a

Happy and Prosperous New Year

Diana

  1. Diana, deadlines tend to take the joy out of most things (IMO), but if they encourage you to finish something that needs finishing, then go for it! I tend to read non-stop (preferring mysteries and historical fiction, but will read most anything that isn't horror or too graphic). I will check out your reading challenge site. It may be similar to the Nanowrimo, annual writing challenge site. I have taken part in that one over the years.

  2. Reading is something I definitely need to set aside more time for! I don't think I would like keeping to a deadline either - reminds me of a school assignment. I love a good auto-biography the most. Most fiction bores me to tears, although I do love the classics. I have so many half-finished novels.......I read the reviews and think they might be good, but then I am so disappointed. I suppose belonging to a book club would force me to finish them! I have written down some of your suggestions - it is nice to get reviews from real people instead of paid literary critics. Thank you for sharing those. I hope you have a lovely year ahead....minus deadlines! xx Karen

  3. I never did well with a reading challenge either. Only reading deadlines I try to meet know are for the ones for the monthly books clubs I attend.
    Happy New Year!

  4. Hi Diana, I just wanted to wish you and yours a Happy New Year!

Reading under pressure would definitely take the pleasure out of it. I hope you enjoy all the books that are to come.

  5. Happy New Year Diana!! Like you, I find it hard to read when I feel I "have" to read a book. I much prefer choosing my own and reading at my own pace.

  6. Hi Diana, It is already 2017 in New Zealand and I've got more than 12 hours of 2016 left in Seattle. How can that be? :-) Thanks for sharing your blog. It's always a pleasure to stop by. Wishing you and yours a very Happy New Year!

  7. Happy New Year to you too.
I made a goal to read 50 books this year but only read 41. Didn't stress over it though. It was more of a aim than a goal. : )

  10. Congratulations on completely your reading challenge! I understand your thoughts about challenges. I've tried a couple and suddenly reading feels like a chore. I wish you a wonderful Happy New Year.

  11. Happy New Year! I read purely to relax and enjoy it. If I have to read for a deadline (or a book review) I tend to get too anxious and then can't concentrate on what I am reading, and that defeats the purpose. I did enough of that when working or in school!! Now it is my main source of entertainment because I really don't enjoy TV. My house is full of men who love sports, so I am outnumbered there...
Have a blessed and happy New Year...and relax and enjoy whatever you do!!

  13. Happy New Year, Diana! You're challenging me to read more. I used to read a lot and now I've let that slide. I don't think I'd enjoy reading with a deadline wither. Hoper all is well with you and I always love to hear from you.
    Be a sweetie,
    Shelia ;)

  14. I read a lot more this year...not sure how. But I challenge myself using goodreads and that works well for me. I don't read books that I don't enjoy any more. If I start one I don't like...I stop it! Happy new year sweet lady! Hugs, Diane

  16. I probably spend more time reading than being on the computer and have to be careful I don't get eyestrain so reading for pleasure comes first. I like to choose when and what I read although I've joined a book group which meets in the local library. I like the social aspect. Happy New Year Diana.

  17. I love to read but at my own sweet and leisure time. I have been rather slow in my reading lately. My attention span is getting shorter.
