Tuesday 4 - How?

How?

Welcome to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4...

Let's jump right in...

1. How did you end up in the place where you are living?
We've lived in three different towns and five houses since we were married. This was the fifth and last move obviously. Our previous house was a cold and damp and we almost immediately applied for a State House. There's usually quite a long waiting list for these houses but we were given one within a few months. I met one or two people who were quite put out that we had been given one so quickly, we were accused by them of jumping the queue and "how could you get one so quickly when you've only just moved here?" We didn't do anything except apply and our current home was inspected as everyone else's is. Anyway, we were put into a house that was only three years old and a few years later had the opportunity to buy it - and here we've been for nearly 50 years.

Our home prior to putting the front fence up. The cone? Who knows?

2. How did you end up with the job you have/had?
I was a nurse in a previous life, the one before I married. But the job I retired from was as a caregiver in a newly built Rest Home. They advertised for staff and I was interviewed but passed over. Then a couple of months later they called to see if I was interested in doing a few night shifts. After that I became a part of the furniture and worked in all the units and on all shifts as well as a short stint in the laundry. I worked there for over 20 years and retired when I was 70.

3. How did you end up with your life partner?
Well Bob is a dart player, he doesn't play any more but still follows the game. My cousin and I went down to the local pub to meet some friends and I walked through the door and straight on through a dart game. Literally. I walked between the dart board and the player who was about to throw his dart. Bob. He came over and introduced himself afterward and we've been together since.

No, I'm not floating, just perched on the very edge of Bob's chair.

4. How did your weekend go and how is the week ahead looking?
Busy, busy, busy. Saturday we went shopping for Theo's birthday present and Sunday was church followed by a shared brunch. On Monday we had a lovely busy morning with Arlo, morning tea, spending his pocket money and then the library. and I still have a couple of afternoons volunteering in the shop, a doctors appointment, bible study group and a visit to my friend in a rest home. So reasonably busy.

Spending some pocket money.

Love Those Sports! ~ Tuesday 4

If you'd like to join in or see what others have to share in this weeks topic just click on the link: Tuesday 4: Love Those Sports!

Love Those Sports! ~ Tuesday 4

Welcome to Tuesday 4 friends!  I am always so happy to have people come and take part.  The Olympics are taking place and  we just had the Super Bowl for American football so perhaps we can talk about sports a bit.  Thank you to Diana of  Doodles and Daydreams for suggesting sports as a subject for this week! So, let's think about sports this week...........

 1. Do you enjoy any of the sports from the Olympics either Summer or Winter? Would you tell us about it?

I love watching the summer and winter Olympics but probably more so the summer ones. I always wanted to take part in the Olympics, swimming, but never made the grade. When my sister was picked to go in the regional coaching team as a teenager and only stuck at it for about a month I was so disappointed. I couldn't understand why she didn't make the most of the opportunity. I gave up going to Swimming Club not long after. I guess my siblings and I were quite sporty when we were young. I'm thoroughly enjoying the winter Olympics just now, especially the ski and snow boarding events.

2. What sports have you taken part in and what good did you get out of participating? If not, was there one you wish you had taken part in? Did sports help you in life?

My summer sport was swimming, I was passionate about it, Our public pool wasn't covered and so we had to wait for the warm weather before it opened and that waiting was a terrible time for me :) I played cricket one year during High School and softball one year at Primary. Marching was another summer sport I really enjoyed. I loved the discipline of the marching and taking part in competitions, and I loved our gold and royal blue uniform. Athletics was once a week but I wasn't very good at them.
During winter there were two sports for girls to choose from, as far as I knew, basketball (not to be confused with today's basketball game) or hockey. I opted for basketball. Teams were nine a side and I was a wing defence, couldn't shoot a goal if my life depended on it :) I loved that as well and it is the only winter sport I played until I left school.
in my netball (basketball) uniform aged about 16

Once I left school I didn't play sports until I came south to live when I played basketball (today's game) for a season but I didn't enjoy it and wasn't very good. Then when I met my hubby I played darts, because he did. I was picked for our local rep team once but played so badly it wasn't funny. We were in a large warehouse in the middle of winter with no heating and I was frozen. That's my excuse anyway :)
I loved the team sports as they gave me a sense of belonging, when you're shy you need that. But I also loved the competitiveness of the swimming, me against the rest :)

3.  Is there a sport you still engage in or one you enjoy watching a lot?

No, I don't play any sports now, although my girls keep wanting me to join a leisure marching group. I consider it :) Hubby watches sport all the time and I think you can have too much of a good thing. I've tended to stop watching a lot any more, after you've watched the darts every day for almost a year you go off it a bit :)

4. Have you any favorite teams you cheer on? Or perhaps a favorite sports figure? How about both??

I don't really follow the local teams unless they are playing a rep game, then I'll watch if I'm home. And any of the national teams, after all we're only a small country so we've got to cheer them on. We're a very sporty little nation with some of the top teams in the world for some sports.

What's the most memorable comeback or turnaround you've ever seen in a sports game, and what made it so special?

None that I can think of off the top of my head.

************

Well It's a rotten summer's day today. I have soup simmering on the stove for tea, the rain has been bucketing down and the Silverstream at the bottom of the street is in flood. Some schools have been closed and there is some surface flooding. But I won't complain - the North Island has taken a hammering in the past fortnight, first the top half and now the bottom half and top of the South Island. We're only getting the tail end of the weather bomb.

So keep well until next time,

Tuesday 4 - Watching TV

It's time again for Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 and I hope you are in the mood for it. If you'd like to take part just click on the link:  Tuesday 4

Television has become part of life for many.

Let's talk about Television okay?

1. Do you own a TV or do you have more than one? Is it old fashioned or one of the new wide screens?

We have one. I suppose our telly would be classed as old fashioned but I'm old enough to remember rabbit ears and getting up to change channels - we only had 2. Sooo...to me ours is modern. Not wall mounted, not 54 inch or larger, just your standard sit in the unit tv. It suits us or has done, hubby has made noises a couple of times lately about getting a big one for the wall but I want a new kitchen bench top. So we're at a bit of an impasse.  :)

2. Which progams do you like to watch ?

We like quiz shows, not game shows so much. At the moment we're enjoying Tenable. Sports are on quite a bit and we're enjoying the winter Olympics just now. Good to see a local hometown girl competing too. Other than that I pick and choose, I prefer to read really.

3. Were you ever a soap opera or serial fan and if so what series or soaps were your favorite?

I enjoyed the original Forsyte Saga series way back in the day but can't get into the remake of it. Also Midsomer Murders was a favourite and we watch reruns when there's nothing else on. I enjoy Call the Midwife too but its not on just now. Currently we're watching The Piano, where amateur pianists were invited to play a piano in various railway stations in Britain. Several were selected from each venue, then one from each group was invited to play in a concert with world renowned pianist Lan Lan and singer songwriter Mika. Each one who took part was invited to the final concert which we're watching tonight. Which means we'll have to find something else we both want to watch :)

4. Is there a TV character that stands out in your mind and if so what makes them special or noteworthy?

No, sorry.

I hope you're having a good week. We started the day off having coffee with friends from Aussie who are away to other parts tomorrow. It was great being able to catch up for an hour this morning.

Have a good day and stay well until next time.

Tuesday 4 - We've got questions

We've Got Questions

Welcome once again to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4.   It's nice to have you take part.

Here are some questions for you.....

1. Where did your mother and father grow up?

Dad grew up in Nelson at the top of New Zealand's South Island where he developed a love of boats and the sea. He made his living as a commercial fisherman.

Mum grew up In Greymouth on the South Island's West Coast. They met at a dance mum attended with her sister and brother-in-law.

2. Where did you grow up?

I grew up on the West Coast in Greymouth. Loved every moment of my childhood but it was quite isolated and a lot of people, me included, moved away for work.

3. What was your favorite meal your mother made? What is your favorite recipe to make?

We lived in my grandparent's home and the meal I always enjoyed most was the Irish stew my grandmother made followed closely by a full roast, mutton, potatoes, parsnip, pumpkin and peas. I've never been able to replicate my grandmother's Irish stew and wonder if that has to do with the long stewing process on top of a coal range. I like easy cooking and love vege soup which mum was great at making.

4. What are the advantages you enjoy where you live?

Small town life. Not far to any amenities, 15 minutes into the city and 20 minutes to beach, lake, river or countryside. And the mountains are only a few hours drive away. Not everyone's cup of tea but we enjoy it.

That's it from me just now.

Tuesday 4 Reading

Good day folks. I thought I'd join in with The Tuesday 4 fun today as reading is something I love. If you'd like to join in as well, or read what others have to say here is the link  https://tuesdaysplace.blogspot.com/

Welcome back to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 where we try and challenge you to think , discover and make new friends through blogging.

1. Would you tell us about a book you particularly enjoyed?

I tend to enjoy most of the books I read, but not all. I get involved in the storylines and at the moment I am reading a light and trite novel and it won't matter whether I remember any of it or not - but I can't wait to get back to it to see what happens next :)

As a child I loved JM Barrie's Peter Pan and found a new copy of it that was close to the one I had way back when...but it turned out to be a Walt Disney version. A bit disappointing.

2. Do you have a favorite book series? How about a favorite series when you were a kid?

I really enjoyed The Seven Sisters series by Lucinda Riley. The series follows the lives of seven adopted sisters with one book dedicated to each sister. Each book also has a historical backstory introducing us to the people and events that led to each adoption. You could almost say there are two books in each one as the stories are told separately, not as a mish mash. Interesting.

This series is followed up with the story of Pa Salt, the man who adopted them and why the adoptions came about. It ties everything together and was a good way to finish off the series. Lucinda Riley died during the writing of this book but her son finished it - I couldn't tell where one author finished and the other started.

Childhood favourites, Enid Blyton's Noddy books, which were later banned but we enjoyed them as little kids. Also her Secret Seven series and when I was a bit older her Famous Five books. Great adventure stories for preteens :)

3. Is there a book that you just did not like or one in which you just could get interested?

Crime and Punishment. The most boring book I have ever attempted to read!

4. Is there an author whose books you don't want to miss or one whose books you avoid?

Not really. Oh, wait. I don't enjoy Catherine Cookson - her books are all the same with just names and places changed and very depressing. There are genres I prefer not to read, psychological thrillers, horror or supernatural are all off the shelf for me. Not my taste at all. I like a murder mystery, espionage, occasional chick lit but nothing that makes me anxious.

And that's about it for me this week.

I hope you're all doing well after the Christmas/New Year break. Take care.

Diana

PS Alice has recovered from her fall with all the resilience six year olds have. Apart from a few grazes and bruises she is carrying on as normal.

Tuesday 4 meme - Christmas

Thank you for joining in for Tuesday 4, begun by Toni Taddeo and kept in her memory. Here is the link if you'd like to join in. https://tuesdaysplace.blogspot.com/

Christmas is fast approaching for billions of people...

1. Do you have a favorite Christmas carol and if so is there a particular version you especially like?

I just like Christmas carols, I don't think I have a favourite.  My grandfather's favourite was Away in a Manger and when I hear it I think of him..

2. Do you have a special dinner for the holidays? What foods are included?

When I was young we had the full Christmas roast. Lamb, potatoes (roast and new), pumpkin, kumara, parsnip, carrots with peas. Mint sauce and gravy. Pudding was jelly, icecream and fruit as well as steamed plum duff (Christmas pudding), complete with thr'penny bits, with custard and cream. And don't forget that Christmas is the middle of summer here. These days it tends to be a barbecue or cold meats and salads. The desserts are usually a selection of cold goodies - trifle, fruit salad, ambrosia, icecream and you can't have Christmas without at least one pavlova. A much more sensible way of celebrating. No one slaving over a hot stove half the day. There's usually Christmas cake and little Christmas tarts to nibble on along with other sweet and savoury snacks.

3. Holiday movies ... which do you like to watch?

I like to watch White Christmas and It's a Wonderful Life. After that I like anything as long as it has a nice Christmassy vibe.

4. What traditions do you continue to keep year after year for the holidays?

We always gather as many of the family as can make it at one place for Christmas Day. I guess that's a tradition. Personally I like to go to the Carol service on Christmas Eve but sadly I'm not usually joined by any family members. We have a Christmas tree but at the rate I'm going this year will be lucky to get one up. But the girls both have one so I'll enjoy theirs. I used to decorate the sitting room but since the family have grown up and left the nest that no longer happens :)

Wishing you a joyful week as we draw near to Christmas.

Tuesday 4 meme is Music.

I've been missing in action for a few days so thought I'd take part in Tuesday 4 (albeit a couple of days late) just to keep in touch :) If you'd like to take part or see what others have to say this is the link   https://tuesdaysplace.blogspot.com/

Tuesday 4 is hosted  in memory of Toni Taddeo who started it a few years ago and I hope you will join in with us each week. It is a great way to visit new bloggers, make friends and discover new and interesting things about your friends.

The topic for this week's Tuesday 4 meme is Music..

1. Do you play a musical instrument?
No, but I'd love to have learned the piano when I was younger. And drums, are they a musical instrument? My son is a drummer and he practised in his bedroom. We had to shut him down at a reasonable time in the evenings though so he didn't upset the neighbours. I also spent a term learning the violin at school, last year at Primary I think, I hated it so didn't go back to learn more. I quite like to listen to one being played though which may be why I was attracted to it to start with.

2. Have you taken music lessons? What kind? If not, is there one you might enjoy learning? It is never too late to start.  You might be surprised at how accomplished it will make you feel.
A friend paid for me to have about half a dozen piano lessons once upon a time, and I can 'kind of read' music as long as it's not complicated.

3. Is there music in your home as background to your day's activities or do you have music playing in your car, etc.?
No, not any more. I always had the radio going or tapes playing before my hubby retired but he has the telly going all day and the rooms are too close together to have both radio and telly on at the same time unfortunately. Yes the radio is usually on in the car.
If so, what kind of music do you enjoy hearing?
I enjoy music from the 60's, my era.  And singers like Shirly Bassey or Bing Crosby are a couple I grew up listening to and so I learned to appreciate a lot of different styles. I also used to enjoy Cleo Laine.
What kind of music do you NOT like?
Heavy metal. Techno.

4.  Do you have a favorite composer or genre of music that you like most? Maybe you like several. Please share with us your thoughts?
Some jazz, I enjoy piano and I also enjoy listening to big band music. I pretty much just like music in most forms :)

Take care until next time

Tuesday 4

Its time for this week's Tuesday 4 and if you would like to join in or see what others are sharing here is the link:

Autumn evenings were always special when I was a kid.
The day ended early and the family gathered in the living room where my mother and grandmother watched a little TV and my father sat on the sofa reading and smoking his pipe.  My parents enjoyed a cup of coffee and sometimes a snack.

1. Does your life go along in the same way all year or do  things change with the seasons?
I spend more time outside when it's warmer though if I'm just sitting with a good book I wear a hat and use sunscreen. When it's cooler I'm only outside when I'm going from one place to another. I'm not a cold weather person.

2. Do you have a favorite meal on the chilly night?
I like soups and stews in the winter. My hubby is not so keen on soup but doesn't complain.

3.  Do you have a snack while you watch TV or read?
Only at afternoon tea or supper although we do sometimes have a small packet of chips or a piece of chocolate in the afternoon and in the evening ice cream.

4. Do you have a fireplace in your home?
We do, but it hasn't been used in probably 30 plus years. We had a gas heater for a while and now have a heat pump installed, so much cleaner and we can set it to come on before we get up so the living rooms are nice and warm when we come out.

Keep well,
until next time,
Diana

A catchup and Tuesday 4

Spring came roaring in like a lion and as well as bringing us all the beautiful colours and flowers of spring it has thrown a good variety of weather at us us. We've had rain, hail, gale force winds and even some snow on our local mountain. And surface flooding on some of the streets.

I've been to a day retreat where it was warm enough to sit out on the deck for morning and afternoon tea.

I've worked in the shop on a couple of days when it was so cold and windy there were very few people out braving it and no customers.

I cooked for Friday Light one night and hope it stuck to their ribs. It was another bitterly cold evening and I was pleased to get home and hunker down in front of the telly.

And we've been to a hardware shop shopping for stuff for the bathroom. And no it wasn't exciting - it was new toilet seat. What I'd really like is a whole new bathroom but I don't see that happening any time soon. Oh well...

And that has been my week. Not very exciting but life is like that and I'm happy for the calm times.
########
And now here is Tuesday 4

Welcome to Tuesday 4 in memory of  our friend Toni Taddeo..

Most people love to read.  It opens other world's to us.  Autumn weather is often conducive to reading as weather can be chillier and rainy. Cozying up with a book can be a lovely way to spend some time.

How do you relax in the evening after dinner?
Generally we settle down and watch telly, but if there's sport on that I'm not interested in I read.

Do you read in bed? What kind of books do you read?
Yes, I read in bed, first my bible and then whatever book I happen to be reading at the moment. It helps me sleep - usually. My taste is pretty eclectic but I don't like psychological thrillers.

Do you have a list of books you look forward to reading?
No, but I have authors I enjoy and I look out for them.

What is the best book you've ever read and why?  Or.. how about the worst book you feel you wasted time reading?
Apart from the bible? Hmm. I really enjoyed the Lord of the Rings about ten years before it gained a cult following and was made into movies. I can't think of any books I particularly wasted time reading, oh hang on, what about Crime and Punishment. That was pretty awful, it took me about 10 years to read. But it wasn't really time wasted as it put me to sleep it was so boring 😕 and I only read it when there was nothing else on hand.
  1. That's it for this week,
  2. blessings,
  3. Diana

Hooray for Hollywood - Tuesday 4

Hooray for Hollywood Part 2

Back so soon?  Well, weeks fly by it seems.  The Inuit people say that time has speeded up and as they are experts on reading the sky due to their hunting, they offer great proof.

Welcome to Tuesday 4 in memory of Toni Taddeo it's first host and founder.

How about the subject of Hollywood, it's 'stars', its products and it's affect on the world?

1.  Which of the big movie stars of the past were your favorites?

Doris Day, she was funny and quirky, rather lovely to look at and could sing. I loved her in Calamity Jane. (And I love musicals).

2. What movie is the funniest you've seen? How about the most romantic?

I can't think of a really funny movie that has stuck with me but I do remember going to one with a friend who moved seats because she said I embarrassed her by laughing too loudly. Oh dear. 😂

Sleepless in Seattle. Youve got mail. Both Meg Ryan I think. I loved Ghost, that was really romantic. And sad. I enjoyed Dirty Dancing as well. Or maybe it was Patrick Swayze I liked?

3.  Do you watch the Oscars or the Emmy Awards shows?

Not any more. I don't know who most of the actors are these days. Once upon a time we made an evening of it and had nibbles and drinks on hand and settled in to watch.

4.  Some movies, plays had a big impact on people.  Orson Welles radio performance of War of the Worlds was broadcast on Halloween 1938 and people, causing panic and widespread hysteria especially in the Grover's Mill area of New Jersey where the "invasion" took place.

Is there a movie that you were greatly influenced or affected by hopefully in a good way?

One movie, which I always thought was called Circus, really affected me in a bad way. All I remember of it is a woman being mauled by a polar bear.  I was about 10 or 11 when I saw it so it was during the 50s. I've looked for it online but can't find it so maybe the title is wrong. Regardless, as I say, it badly affected me and I never went back to the movies for years. I can still see the scene today.

Thanks for dropping by and thank you so much for participating and making this a lot of fun for everyone.

Lets Blog - Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4

Let's Blog!

Welcome once again friends to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4 and how about talking about blogging this week since it's something we all do anyway.
Get yourself a cuppa, come sit down at your computer and let's think about blogging for a bit....
Blog is short for Weblog, a log or diary on the World Wide Web or internet.   Your journal or diary can hold personal stories, ideas, opinions of all kinds and can be private or public as you wish.  It is an excellant way to document your life or interests.

1. Why did you begin blogging?
My niece mentioned she was blogging and I had no idea what she was talking about but she showed me her site and I thought "if she can do it so can I". So I had a go and found I enjoyed it. I started off trying to copy her upbeat style but decided that wasn't me and so now it is more "me".

2. What benefits does blogging offer you?
It keeps my brain active. I'm at an age where the words don't always come as easily as they used to so I need to keep it exercised. And I get to interact with people from all over the world - how cool is that?

3. Have you made friends from blogging?
I like to think so. I appreciate when you take the trouble to comment and although I've never met any of you I look forward to reading what you've been up to and how you're faring in your corner of the world.

4. Where do you get ideas for things you blog about? Do other bloggers influence you?
Sometime other bloggers will give me an idea but I like to take my inspiration from what is happening around me including what is going on with the family. And I do enjoy taking part in a collective blog like this occasionally, it makes me think!

So if you want to join in or read what others have to say join us here at  https://tuesdaysplace.blogspot.com/

see you in a few days,
keep well,
have fun

Tea Break - Tuesday 4

Welcome once again to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4.

The longest living cat on record, Creme puff,  lived to be 38 years old and was given coffee at breakfast all his life.  Breakfast for him was bacon, eggs, broccoli and coffee.
The previous owner of the record was Grandpa Rex Allen who\ lived to be 34 years old on the same diet.
Coffee reduces chances of Alzheimers, Parkinsons.
Tea without adding milk can "tan" your bladder making for many problems  Milk binds the tanic acid making it safe to drink.
Homemade food increases an animal's life span too.  Let's talk about it, okay?

1. Coffee increases a bee's memory and does the same for you.      Bees love caffeinated coffee  flowers.  What do you love about coffee or tea?

I love two cups of tea first thing in the morning with my breakfast and I'm quite fussy about it so like to make it myself. It sets me up for the day.

2. If you opened a tea or coffee shop in your neighborhood what would it be named?  How would you decorate it? Would pastry or cake be served?

I'd have to call it 'Tea Break'. I have no idea how I'd decorate so would have to give my daughters almost free range, but it would have to be cosy and comfortable. And definitely cake...and pastries. And biscuits (U.S. cookies) and scones with cream and jam, (U.S. biscuits).

3. Beethoven required 60 beans per cup of coffee.  How particular are you about your coffee or tea?

I'm quite particular about my tea. I like Dilmah, preferably English Breakfast. If I'm away I'm happy with whatever the hostess gives me but it's always good to get back home to my preferred tipple.

4.Italian clergy in1600s  declared coffee the devil's brew and forbid it.
Pope Clement the VIII wanted to taste it, loved it and blessed it ... today, new research shows black coffee is drunk mainly by psychopaths...
Sweden banned coffee in 1746 as dangerous and Islam banned it for causing free thinking!
How do you take your coffee you free thinking, radical and what's your favorite brand of devil's brew?

I love my Dilmah tea, none of this free thinking radical stuff for me, mainly because it triggers migraines, unfortunately!

Have a good week,
blessings,
Diana

Sandwich time

Sandwich Time

Welcome once again to Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4.
Sandwiches are a lunch time favorite.

In the 1930s two favorite sandwiches were ham, pickles and mustard and tuna with rice, capers, pepper and paprika.  I think it probably needed mayo!
Sandwiches can be a  simple peanut butter and jelly or a classy Monte Cristo.

1. What is your favorite sandwich and how do you make it?
I'm not a very exciting sandwich maker and we tend to only have them in the summer. I like a tomato, lettuce, ham and cheese usually on white bread but not always. A little mayo on the lettuce as well. Otherwise lettuce and marmite or cheese and marmite. Marmite is a yeast based breakfast spread not to be confused with vegemite which is more common in Australia. Toasted sandwiches are always good too but not with lettuce.

2.  What is the best bread for making toast?  How about for making sandwiches?
We like Couplands Super thick toast bread for sandwiches and toast. It stays lovely and fresh longer than other bread we've found.

3.  If you go out to eat for lunch are you more likely to stay with a safe choice or be more adventurous?
No I'm not a very adventurous sandwich eater when out. Usually I look for an egg
sandwich made with chopped chives and some mayo. I don't keep eggs at home as we don't eat them very often so enjoy a plain old egg sandwich if I'm out for lunch.

4. Dagwood, hoagie, submarine, Po boy, grinder. Whatever they are called where you are, do you like them and if so what do you want on it?
Pardon? I'm guessing, but don't know, that these are either filled rolls or similar to a subway. On the odd occasion when we go to Subway we tend to still go for the salad ingredients with cold meat but have occasionally become quite daring and tried some of the other ingredients. Usually in a toasted grain bread.

Have a good week.

Diana

Travelling with Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4

Hello! It's time for Toni Taddeo's Tuesday 4

Summer is June 21st and people usually take advantage of the warm weather to take a trip or vacation or day trips to visit, shop or for recreation.

So could we talk about travel?

1. What are the most memorable destinations you've visited, and what made them stand out? (this could include places like museums, art galleries, etc. not only a vacation site.)

Memorable places? The first that came to mind when I saw this question was my trip to Fiji with a nursing colleague when we were  just 18. The culture was so different to anything I knew and the colours, smells and sights were so wonderful. The first overseas trip either of us had ever made, in an age where no one went overseas (not where we lived anyway). It was so exciting and we looked forward to it for so long.  It was probably another 40 years before I went overseas again and that was to visit my sister and her husband and family who had moved to Australia. We took the family and that was an exciting time for all of us. We had a great time, visited one of the islands off the Queensland coast among other things. But we learnt a good lesson, don't visit north Queensland in the summer, we'd gone for Christmas! Never again.

Then Aaron  was living in Japan, met a Chinese girl and we went to Japan for the wedding. What a wonderful time and I don't really know where to start. So totally culturally different and we didn't speak the language. Thank goodness we had our family interpreters with us most of the time :) We learnt how to use the buses and some of the drivers got to know us and where our stops were. All I can say is if you plan on going to Japan - do. It was a wonderful experience made even better because we were staying in Aaron's flat in an older part of the city and didn't do only tourist things.

2. Which hidden gem locations have you explored that you'd recommend to others ?

I don't know that Te Papa the national museum of New Zealand could be called a hidden gem but if you're in Wellington make a point of visiting, even if it is just to visit the Gallipolli Exhibition. I found it to be a very emotional experience but had to rush the end of it, one because I was getting emotional and two because my GKB had disappeared about 10 minutes earlier. It depicts conditions for the men and women in the battle at Gallipolli during the first world war and as well as letters, photographs and short films there are life size models of soldiers and nurses as well as a model of the trenches. Well worth a visit.

Anywhere in New Zealand is well worth a visit though :) We have lakes, beaches, rivers and mountains all within a short drive of most places.

3. What’s the most unique cultural experience you’ve had while traveling ?

Well, lets see. I've been packed like a sardine into a commuter train in Japan, eaten raw seafood which was still moving. I couldn't get out of it as I was the future mother in law and that position held a certain amount of prestige apparently. And part of that was getting to eat first whether I wanted to or not. I didn't want to actually but was told I needed to and looked around the table and every eye was on me, kids and all. My GKB was smirking away but he got to try it too. So I bit the bullet, or raw, moving octopus, and swallowed. Then they all  clapped and I had to do it again. And then they all tucked in. Not my most exciting moment I can tell you but certainly memorable.

On the day of the wedding I got to take part in a tea ceremony at the reception. No one warned me but I duly took part and Aaron's sister in law guided me through, We finished our tea, only the bride, groom and mothers took part, and I looked up to see Aaron and Sofi kneeling in front of me. Once again no one had warned me I was supposed to bestow a blessing on them so I stumbled through something, I'm not good at off the cuff stuff, but finally it was over.

4.What mode of transportation is your favorite for a long trip? How about a short trip?

I would have to say I prefer to travel by plane for a long trip. Well let me qualify that. I live on an island. If I want to visit family who don't live in the South Island I have to cross the sea, to the North Island or to the bigger island to the west (Australia) so really I don't have a choice. I don't enjoy flying and we usually drive if we're going anywhere in the South Island.
