Today is Shrove Tuesday.
The day before Lent starts.
The day we eat pancakes for our tea.
When I was a child we always had pancakes
for tea on what we called 'Pancake Day'.
I love mine with butter and sugar,
some people prefer other types of toppings
or fillings and some even have savoury ones.
We had a great variety tonight ranging from berries
and bananas and cream to syrup and honey
just to mention a few.

How do you like yours?
Tonight we had our pancakes at church.
Not too bad a turnout either,
this being the first pancake tea we've held
since I've been attending here.
I think the ages ranged from about 10 to 85.

Some people don't know anything about Shrove Tuesday
or that Lent is supposed to be a time of fasting,
and so I found myself explaining
a little bit to one of our newer members.
We all enjoyed a nice casual time of being together
and enjoying each others' company over food.
Followed of course, by a cuppa!

Wishing you a happy week
as we begin the lead up to Easter,

This post started me thinking back quite a few years...maybe 30 or so. The ladies guild at our church would always have a function in the hall on Shrove Tuesday. Part of the festivities was the 'pancake races' where entrants had to run along flipping a pancake in a frying pan...some pancakes 'hit the dust' accompanied by a lot of laughter! Sounds like you had a lovely day :-)
ReplyDeleteWell, I for one love the idea of eating pancakes with my tea...in fact, pancakes are always good with anything...and sometimes, so is tea! Have a wonderful day, Diana!
ReplyDeleteShrove Tuesday is also known as Fat Tuesday in New Orleans here in the US. Pancakes and tea sounds much more respectable, and tasty, too. I like the way you included so many flavors as well.
ReplyDeleteI love Pancakes!!!
ReplyDeleteI had pancakes for breakfast. Just syrup on them today but like them best with strawberries and whipped cream added.
ReplyDeletePancakes are one of my favorite meals..breakfast or dinner. Butter and a good jelly is what I like. Not a big fan of syrup but I do use it sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI'm probably the odd person out here. I don't like pancakes and seldom make them.
ReplyDeleteThis post has made me hungry for pancakes. As a child growing up in Texas we called them hot cakes. We always ate them with butter and syrup, but now I like a bit of strawberries and whipped cream.
ReplyDeleteYour pancakes look lovely. Thank you for stopping by my blog in Coventry, England. I enjoyed visiting yours!

A lovely together time Diana, Oh and I'd have to have a couple with butter and syrup, and then a couple more with strawberry jam and cream oh and maybe one to finish with honey. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm late to visit here but saw your comment on Maria's blog, and wondered about you and your blog. I like lemon and sugar on my pancakes, but really wanted to say what a good idea to cook them on the sandwich maker......I would never have thought of that, so thanks.
