Cruise ships in port

It was a cool day, we have had next to no summer weather this year and to be honest it is just a tad depressing. So on a whim we decided to drive down to Port Chalmers and visit my GKB's sister and family. We didn't warn them, we decided the drive would be good regardless. We knew there were a couple of cruise ships in so we detoured to have a look at them on the way.

Overlooking part of the Port from up on a hill.

The MS Maasdam on the left registered in Amsterdam.
She takes 1258 passengers and 580 crew.

The Dawn Princess on the right.
She is slightly bigger and is registered in Bermuda.
She takes on board 1950 passengers and has a crew of 900.

Just the day before the Ovation of the Sea was in port and she would have dwarfed both these ships. She had a crew of 1300 and takes 4180 passengers and I believe she is the 4th largest cruise ship in the world and the largest one operating in the southern hemisphere at the moment. Now that would have been a sight to see.
It is cruise ship season and so over the next few months we will have a variety of ships coming into port and hopefully the passengers will enjoy what our city has to offer even if the weather doesn't cooperate.

I've never been cruising and would love to enjoy the experience once in my life, I think it would be an amazing.
How about you?

  1. I have never been on a cruise ship like that. The mere size of it I find a bit daunting.

  2. I have never gone on a cruise either, Diana. I do not need to be on a vacay where I can eat 24 hours a day.:) And I like to be able to control my vacation, stopping where I want, going down rabbit trails etc. I hope the warmer weather arrives soon. It is in the 60s here today although it is rainy.

  3. I have never been on a cruise either, Diana and don't think I would like to. Maybe you can go and tell us all about your experience.

  4. Well, although I know people who cruise all the time, I've only done it twice. First was on the Holland America headed to the Caribbean, the other was Carnival Cruise line headed to Alaska. I have to say that I'm not a "cruise" person. My mom won the first trip and took me with her. It was fine. Hit some bad weather and I was seasick. The Alaskan cruise was great... would possibly do that again. Unbelievably good seafood!

  5. Ken and I went on one cruise at the end of 2009. I'm glad I went to see what it was like but I wouldn't go again. Just not my thing.

  7. I have never been on a cruise, either, but my little family and I have a secret dream of going on an Alaskan cruise one day! God's will be done. Thank you for sharing, Diana. God bless you!

  8. Wonderful to see the cruise ships and your beautiful header! I have never taken a cruise, but would love to take the Alaskan cruise along the inside passage. (I live near Seattle) I see that I am not the only one! Wishing you a lovely week. xx Karen

  9. It's interesting to see the cruise ships coming into port and I'm sure the folk will enjoy their time on shore. I've not been on a cruise although I was pleased my late parents went on one to Norway which was a holiday of a lifetime for them. Our widowed neighbour goes on them with her girl friend regularly and enjoys the company on board as well as seeing new places. Have a good day!

  10. It is amazing to see just how big these ships are isn't it. They are described as floating cities and they really do seem like that don't they.
